Cybersonik 2011

The follow-up to Dark 7 – book seven UK bands and host an afternoon and evening of live music in the Camden Underworld. Despite putting the first band on stage a mere 10 minutes after opening the doors, they managed to pull a great crowd and the venue stayed busy for the duration. Special credit goes to the guys from Machine Rox, who organised the whole event. As for me, I was doing the bit between the bands….here’s what was played.

Moby – We Are All Made Of Stars

Jordan Reyne, MaxDmyz, Ventenner, Die Kur

A short-notice set it might have been, but a chance to DJ for a very mixed line-up. I’d actually support DJed for MaxDmyz 10 years previously at Imperial College Union. Also finally a chance to see Die Kur after playing them in sets a couple of times, and two interesting discoveries in Ventenner and Jordan Reyne.

Sulpher – One Of Us
Ministry – The Fall
Stahlhammer – Herz Aus Stahl
Weissglut – Etwas Kommt In Deine Welt
Stabbing Westward – Lies
Acumen Nation – Parasite Mine
Machines Of Loving Grace – Butterfly Wings
Electric Hellfire Club – Hypochristian

Alternative Bring’n’Buy Sale – August 2011

Having taken a break from playing CDs at the Alternative Bring’n’Buy in April in order to, erm, sell CDs at the Alternative Bring’n’Buy, today I went back to Plan A. I was joined by my regular co-DJs Robert Cowlin and Scott McMahon, who between them handled all the genres than having guitars in.

11am-12noon – Another Sunday Morning Special

I’ve kicked off with darkambient, mittelalter, neo-folk and dark cabaret in the past. And today? A 13-minute psychedelic Krautrock epic. And then lots of old-school synths. I love the early shift!

Tangerine Dream – Fly And Collision Of Comas Sola
Jean-Michel Jarre – Ethnicolor 1
Suicide – Rocket USA
Claire Obscur – Blume
Twilight Ritual – Closed Circuit
DAF – Der Räuber und der Prinz
Depeche Mode – Puppets

Attrition – Thin Red Line
Kirlian Camera – The Desert Inside
Diary Of Dreams – Soul Stripper
Silke Bischoff – Waste Of Time
Girls Under Glass – Ohne Dich
Pink Turns Blue – Your Master Is Calling

2pm-3pm – EBM and Electro-Industrial

I think this is one of my favourite sets in recent times. A quick salute to the stall that sold me all those Pankow and Click Click CDs!

Front 242 – U-Men
Spetsnaz – That Perfect Body
Jäger 90 – Wie Du
Kommando XY – Genesis Does (What Nintendon’t)
Nitzer Ebb – Control I’m Here

Plastic Noise Experience – Kill The 6
Funker Vogt – History
System:FX – Overdrive
Dismantled – Thanks For Everything
Inertia – Shakalaka Baby!

5pm-5:30pm – Jonny vs Scott Tag Team Silliness

In the true B&B tradition, there was time for playing somewhat ‘atypical’ tracks at the end. Every time it gets more and more random..…

Men Without Hats – The Safety Dance
Pulp – Disco 2000
The Confettis – The Sound Of C
Placebo – Daddy Cool
Mike Oldfield – Moonlight Shadow
Lady Gaga – Judas
The Bloodhound Gang – The Bad Touch (Eiffel 65 Remix)
Lordi – Hard Rock Hallejulah

Dark 7 2011

Dark 7 was an event organised by the members of the band Machine Rox. The concept was to book a number of UK scene bands (the only overseas act, Terror Error, withdrew before the event) and hold a one day mini-festival in the Camden Underworld.

System:FX were called into headline, although the first four bands on the bill were completely new to me. A scan through various online profiles and chance to watch soundcheck gave me a chance of devising a vaguely relevant set before each band came on, and despite an occasionally sticking ‘Play’ button, it seemed to go quite well. So here’s what was played.

Digicore – We Will Protect You
Godflesh – Like Rats
Concrete Lung – Destructive
Revolting Cocks – Key To The City (Vegas Mix)

Covenant – One World One Sky

Reptile March 2011

Reptile is a monthly club held at the Minories at Tower Hill, playing a mix of gothic, industrial, rock, metal, 80s and various other alternative styles. It’s something of a regular of mine and many of my friends, so to get a chance to DJ there, and on my birthday at that, was a particularly special occasion. We’d agree beforehand that I’d be focusing on the industrial/electronic area, which could mean a lot of things to a lot of people. To me, it meant this…..

11pm-11:30pm

The Crüxshadows – Tears
Diary Of Dreams – The Curse
Spahn Ranch – Heretics Fork

Alternative Bring’n’Buy Sale – December 2010

For the third time in 2010, I take to the DJ booth for London’s premier event for independent stallholders of a goth/alternative ilk to set up shop in a hall in Tufnell Park for 6 hours on a Sunday. More stalls than ever, attendence topped 200 once again, what’s not to love?

Scott McMahon joined me once again, prior to rushing down to the Reptile Club to play some more. Also joining me today was James Black of Black n Beard Radio, taking a break from stallholding duties to spin a few sets. As it was the festive season, each of us took a chance to spin some vaguely Chrismassy tunes.

10:30am-11am – Jonny’s Sunday Morning Ambience

The Dome had refitted it’s soundsystem, meaning we we up and running much earlier than usual. Some would have taken the opportunity to grab a coffee. Not me.

Jean-Michel Jarre – Equinoxe I
Vangelis – Tears In Rain
Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson – Journey
Steve Roach – Infinite Shore
Lustmord – Beckoning
Wendy Carlos – Title Music From A Clockwork Orange

1pm-2pm – Half Industrial, Half Goth

I don’t get to play much trad, so it was nice to play some bands that I really should be spinning more often – I’d never previously played Mission, Cult or the Nephs, and I haven’t played The Cure since 2001!

Rammstein – Moskau
Terminal Choice – Be Like Me
Agonoize – For The Sick And Disturbed
Psyclon Nine – Lamb Of God
Feindflug – Leitbild
Signal Aout 42 – To Talk Nonsense
Project Pitchfork – Requiem

The Mission – Severina
Sisters Of Mercy – Alice
Christian Death – Romeo’s Distress
The Cure – 10:15 Saturday Night

4pm-5pm – Goth of the Pops?

The first three songs in this set each remind me of a very special person in my life. The last? Probably best not to ask!

Ravenous – The Voices You Hear (Spit and Polish Mix)
Mesh – Step By Step
Icon Of Coil – Stimulated
XPQ-21 – Rockin’ Silver Knight (Skinjob Remix)

Welle:Erdball – Monoton + Minimal
SPOCK – White Christmas
Erasure – Take A Chance On Me
Divine – You Think You’re A Man

5pm-5:20pm – Tag Team With Myself

Unfortunately, neither of my co-DJs was available for tag-team today, so I got cheesy for 20 minutes whilst everyone was clearing up.

Rocky Horror Picture Show – Time Warp
The Reverend Horton Heat – Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Men Without Hats – Safety Dance
The Human League – Don’t You Want Me
Pet Shop Boys – Always On My Mind
A-Ha – Take On Me

Alternative Bring’n’Buy Sale – October 2010

After skipping the July event, I returned to the Dome to DJ the Alternative Bring’n’Buy Sale once more. I had no less than three co-DJs, Robert Cowlin putting in a couple of hours of trad-goth and new wave, Scott McMahon coming in at the last minute to do an hour of metal, with Ashleigh (aka Miss Jade) taking a break from her stall and handling the final hour.

10:45am-12noon

At least a couple of people thanked me for playing bands that weren’t even in the setlist – yep, it’s another Jonny early-hours special! The first track was 13 minutes long, which explains the early start.

Swans – The Sound
Sol Invictus – A Rose In Hell
Death In June – But What Ends When The Symbols Shatter?
Black Tape For A Blue Girl – All My Lovers

An industrial set….

Accessory – Deadline
God Module – Resurrection Resurrected
The Retrosic – Ground Zero (Valley Of Death)
[:SITD:] – Laughingstock
Faderhead – Noisebastardz

5pm-5:30pm

Usually any DJs remaining would do a tag-team ‘fun set’ whilst everyone’s clearing up. None of the others could join me today (though Ashleigh put in the Evelyn Evelyn track), so I did it solo this time.

Ultraviolence – Paranoid
Utah Saints – Something Good
Squeeze – Cool For Cats
Evelyn Evelyn – Elephant Elephant
Madness – Baggy Trousers
Men Without Hats – The Safety Dance
Falco – Rock Me Amadeus
Adam Ant – Stand And Deliver
Ian Dury – Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick

Black Celebration September 2010

Black Celebration August 2010

As very much a last-minute thing (so last minute I didn’t get much chance to advertise the fact I was playing beyond a rush of Facebook invites!), I DJed the Black Celebration night at the Elixir Bar. As it’s a Depeche Mode themed night, you might notice a certain band from Basildon occuring quite frequently in the setlist.

9:15pm to 10:30pm – Early Mode, European New Wave, Old EBM

I wanted a concept to base my first set round, so decided to play some of the earliest Mode tracks alongside a number of other bands who also helped shape the sound of electronic pop in the early 80s.

12:05 – 1:05 – 80s Anthems With Metal For Dessert

After a midnight airing of ‘Pimpf’, I decided to do a DM heavy pure 80s set. Well, until I got some very enthusisatic requests for metal towards the end and prompty did a quick direction change. If you plan to play a set of crowd-pleasers, you gotta please the crowd!
