The Frightmare Before Christmas

Time for a bit of pre-Christmas celebration. This was a three-club special, myself playing under the Neo-Noir banner, joined by Y34R Z3R0 (which I’d DJed at myself earlier this year) and Electric Dreams, with 2 DJs from each night playing. My own contribution came at 1:30am, and here’s what it sounded like.

Celldweller – Stay With Me (Unlikely)
Officers – Co-Education
Necro Facility – You Want It
Stromkern – Stand Up
Skinny Puppy – Worlock (Live In Dresden)
VNV Nation – Serial Killer (A+F V2 Version)
Front 242 – Motion
Militant Cheerleaders On The Move – Freaks
Depeche Mode – Something To Do
Echo and the Bunnymen – The Killing Moon
Joy Division – Isolation
Teardrop Explodes – Reward
Soft Cell – Bedsitter
Ultravox – Sleepwalk

Neo-Noir November 2012

Neo-Noir returns to it’s monthly pattern, now very much back at it’s original home of the London Stone, the last remaining eerie pub in London. Last nights music policy was best described as ’20th Century Alternative’ or ‘Party Like It’s 1999′. 5 DJs in total (so if I didn’t play it, they probably did), and my own sets were as follows.

Set 1 – 11:10-11:45

Laibach – Jesus Christ Superstar
16 Volt – Skin
Revolting Cocks – (Let’s Get) Physical
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult – Kooler Than Jesus
Einstürzende Neubauten – Feurio!
Front Line Assembly – Mindphaser
Cobalt 60 – Bye Bye
Armageddon Dildos – East West
And One – Techno Man

Set 2 – 2:10-2:50

A Flock Of Seagulls – I Ran
Siouxsie and the Banshees – Happy House
The Stranglers – No More Heroes
Sparks – This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us

Nightrain

Here’s my setlist from Nightrain. Be assured it is only a temporary deviation from the norm for me, not a sudden change in direction, but I did enjoy it, I do like ALL these songs and I would do it a few more times if the chance came up.

8:30pm-9:15pm – Album-Oriented Rock

No point playing the big anthems before everyone’s had a drink or two, so I decided to play what might otherwise be called ‘The Old Grey Whistle Set’.

Alan Parsons Project – Eye In The Sky
Supertramp – Breakfast In America
Emerson, Lake and Palmer – Karn Evil 9 – 1st Impression (Part 2)

Rainbow – Long Live Rock’n’Roll
ZZ Top – Sharp Dressed Man
Journey – Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)

12:15am-1:15am – Anthem-Oriented Rock

Had some beers and some live music, so no messin’ now. Solid gold rock anthems all the way.

Quiet Riot – Cum On Feel The Noise
Bon Jovi – Runaway
Van Halen – Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love
Iron Maiden – Can I Play With Madness
Motörhead – Iron Fist
Pat Benatar – All Fired Up

Led Zeppelin – Rock and Roll
Argent – God Gave Rock and Roll To You

2:15am-3am – Any Other Rock? (Jonny vs Simon)

We ended the nights with 45 minutes of tag-team DJing, me on laptop, Simon Landmine on CDs, first putting in some anthems we’d missed earlier then winding things down with the last 3 songs.

Guns’n’Roses – Welcome To The Jungle
Suicidal Tendencies – Send Me Your Money
Twisted Sister – We’re Not Going To Take It
Judas Priest – Living After Midnight

Anthrax – Got The Time
Mott The Hoople – All The Young Dudes

Neo-Noir – September 2012

A return to Neo-Noir’s original venue, and a midnight set from me. Due to requests prior to the night and various ‘Ibiza Floor’ discussions during the previous week, I decided to focus (for the first half at least) on 90s dance crossover classics. The second half of the set focused on more scene-focused output, including (amazingly!) my first airing of a track from VNV Nation’s seminal ‘Empires’ album.

808 State – In Yer Face
Orbital – Chime
The Grid – Texas Cowboys
Underworld – Cowgirl
Empirion – Narcotic Influence 1
Editors – Papillon (Tiesto Remix Edit)
Faithless – God Is A DJ

Setlists from my two sets at Y34R Z3R0 – a Nine Inch Nails-based club night.

Reptile January 2012

I post my setlists to capture some of the feel of the event I played at. On this occasion, it’s impossible to do so. The dozen songs listed below might just look like a fairly average setlist for me, but they don’t sum up the atmosphere of the night as a whole. This was something special. Having put in some darkwave classics early on, for the second set, I aimed for a kind of ’90s Full Tilt Revival’ sort of concept – which actually worked.

In Strict Confidence – Set Me Free
Die Krupps – Bloodsuckers
Das Ich – Destillat (VNV Nation Remix)

Reptile March 2011

Reptile is a monthly club held at the Minories at Tower Hill, playing a mix of gothic, industrial, rock, metal, 80s and various other alternative styles. It’s something of a regular of mine and many of my friends, so to get a chance to DJ there, and on my birthday at that, was a particularly special occasion. We’d agree beforehand that I’d be focusing on the industrial/electronic area, which could mean a lot of things to a lot of people. To me, it meant this…..

11pm-11:30pm

The Crüxshadows – Tears
Diary Of Dreams – The Curse
Spahn Ranch – Heretics Fork

Black Celebration September 2010

Black Celebration August 2010

As very much a last-minute thing (so last minute I didn’t get much chance to advertise the fact I was playing beyond a rush of Facebook invites!), I DJed the Black Celebration night at the Elixir Bar. As it’s a Depeche Mode themed night, you might notice a certain band from Basildon occuring quite frequently in the setlist.

9:15pm to 10:30pm – Early Mode, European New Wave, Old EBM

I wanted a concept to base my first set round, so decided to play some of the earliest Mode tracks alongside a number of other bands who also helped shape the sound of electronic pop in the early 80s.

Pyrolator – Nordatlantik
Malaria – Kaltes Klares Wasser
Depeche Mode – Puppets

12:05 – 1:05 – 80s Anthems With Metal For Dessert

After a midnight airing of ‘Pimpf’, I decided to do a DM heavy pure 80s set. Well, until I got some very enthusisatic requests for metal towards the end and prompty did a quick direction change. If you plan to play a set of crowd-pleasers, you gotta please the crowd!
