Tragedy >For Us< - TH-IrrEv #05

After a long wait, the 5th Terminates Here Irregular Event came to London. This time, myself, Nathan Nothing and Kriegslok explored the worlds of old-school EBM, dark electro and minimal wave. Of all the IrrEv’s so far, this was the one I most wanted to become a ‘regular’, and it may well become so. But for now, this is what I played:

Set 1

DJ Terminates Here vs DJ The Scot – November 2014

It was a lot of fun last time, so DJ The Scott and myself decided to once again extend the social side of the Alt Bring’n’Buy by crossing the road, and continuing the DJing on an ‘Open Request List’ basis. We passed round sheets of paper, pencils and let the audience decide the direction the music took. Here’s (half) of what was played.

Set 1

To prove how unexpected things happen at such events, I open up with a 90s guitar rocker that would be unlikely to offend many eardrums, only for the early requests to immediately throw me back a decade to 80s new wave!

Manic Street Preachers – From Despair to Where
Depeche Mode – Shake The Disease
New Order – True Faith
Eurythmics – Missionary Man
Soft Cell – Sex Dwarf
The Damned – Eloise
Peter Murphy – Cuts You Up

Set 2

A surprising number of requests for German-language songs. This set was (mostly) for them.

Clan Of Xymox – This World
Goethes Erben – Leben Um Zu Leben
E Nomine – Mitternacht
Mantus – Keine Liebe
Rammstein – Dalai Lama
Fleischmann – Frei
Eisbrecher – This Is Deutsch ([:SITD:] Remix) – two band requests in one!
Oomph! – Der Neue Gott
The Creatures – Exterminating Angel

Set 3

Post-punk and classic rock, plenty of demand for both!

Siouxsie and the Banshees – Love In A Void
The Cure – Killing an Arab
Specimen – Hex
Talking Heads – Psycho Killer
Xmal Deutschland – Begrab Meinen Herz
The Birthday Party – Release The Bats
Generation X – Wild Youth
Patti Smith – Because The Night
Iggy Pop – Lust For Life
Guns’n’Roses – Live and Let Die
Warrant – Cherry Pie
Whitesnake – Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City
Blue Oyster Cult – (Don’t Fear) The Reaper

Closing Tag-Team Set

A bewildering final run of requests led to our closing tag-team consisting (unusually) of some quite long songs. S: indicates Scott’s selections, TH: are mine!

The Sisterhood – Giving Ground
Partly Faithful – Stop
Das Ich – Keimzeit
How To Destroy Angels – The Space In Between
Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb
Radiohead – Paranoid Android
Metallica – One
Johnny Cash – When The Man Comes Around
Wendy Carlos – Beethoviana (from ‘A Clockwork Orange’)

DJ Terminates Here vs DJ The Scot – September 2014

It’s customary after the Alt Bring’n’Buy to cross the road to Aces and Eights for a post-event pizza and pint. This time we took it further, and continued the DJing here, too.

NIN – Dead Souls
Killing Joke – Requiem

X-KiN Video Launch – Terminates Here IrrEv #04

The 4th Terminates Here Irregular Event saw a return to both the venue (Dirty Dicks) and music style (alternative electronic) heard at IrrEv #01 (Byte Back), as well as reprising an earlier theme, namely the launch of the latest X-KiN video (I was DJing at an earlier such event in September 2012). Captain Howard also returned to the event, both of us playing tunes from our own projects as well as X-KiN, whilst the later sets were handled by Jester and Matt C. Vs – Terminates Here Irregular Event #03

The third Terminates Here irregular event was a Bank Holiday DJ battle between myself and Scott McMahon. Two concepts adopted were frequent changeovers and a music policy that let the request list decide the playlist. Whilst we generally tried to make sure each song in some way followed the last, the number of different subgenres we covered is illustrated (well, my half is), below.

Unofficial Sets

Compiled here are a number of setlists from events that I provided music for but for whatever reason don’t qualify as ‘official’ Terminates Here sets, for one of the following reason:
  • The set was prerecorded
  • The event was a ‘practice’ or kit-testing session
  • The event was so poorly attended that it was a glorified practice session.
  • The set took place in a private building (private parties in regular pubs/clubs DO count)

London Gothic Meetup 200 – 24 October 2009

There was no DJ booth here, so I took requests online in advance of the event. The set was premixed into blocks of 3 or 4 songs, with gaps to allow for requests on the night. Robert once again handled the goth rock, post-punk, new wave area, thus letting me handle all the fringe styles. No-one yelled ‘Play Some Goth’ all night, so I think we got away with it.

7pm-8pm

Current 93 – All The Pretty Little Horses

Mittelalter Nacht – 17 April 2010

This was the first known attempt at running a mittelalter night in London – and where better to hold it than Zeitgeist, a German Gastropub south of the river. Thanks must go to Ian for organising the whole event, and also the organisers for putting on a charity buffet, which was as tasty and filling as everything else I’ve ever eaten there!
There was no DJ booth, so sets were pre-recorded. Ian and Alan provided the bulk of the music, though I did provide one hour myself, which was played between 9pm and 10pm. To keep things varied, I managed to get some neo-folk, folk rock and ethereal tunes into my own set. Here it is:

Fire And Ice – The Wind That Shakes The Barley
Estampie – A Voi Gente Lamia – O Virgo Spelendens

Mittelalter Nacht II – 22 October 2010

For the second time in 2010, a Mittelalter Night was held at the Zeitgeist gastropub. A larger pool of DJs were called upon this time, covering everything from folk metal to mittelalter punk. My own set included a selection of more ‘electro-mittelalter’ tracks as well as some more conventional material. For technical reasons it was pre-recorded, but was played between 9pm and 10pm on the night itself.
